Summary
Transello is a browser extension that translates text, selections and web pages when you ask it to. By default the translation runs locally using Chrome's built-in translation. Transello has no server. It does not collect analytics or telemetry, and it does not sell or share your data.
What Transello processes and where
- Local mode (default). The text you translate is processed by Chrome's built-in Translator and Language Detector on your device. It is not sent to Transello or to any third party. The first time you use a language pair, Chrome may download a language model from Google. That download contains no text you are translating.
- Cloud mode (only if you turn it on). You can choose OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), DeepSeek or OpenRouter and connect your own account or API key. When you do, the text you ask Transello to translate is sent directly from your browser to the provider you chose, only to perform that translation. For a full page, Transello first shows you how much text will be sent and asks you to confirm. It asks again every time on sites that look sensitive, such as banking, email or payment sites. The provider's own privacy policy and terms apply to that data, and the provider may charge your account:
- OpenAI: https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy
- Anthropic: https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy
- DeepSeek: https://platform.deepseek.com/downloads/DeepSeek%20Privacy%20Policy.html
- OpenRouter: https://openrouter.ai/privacy
- Page content. Transello reads page text only after you choose a Transello menu item or press its shortcut. It reads only the current tab, and only the selected or visible text needed for that request. It does not monitor your browsing.
What is stored on your device
- Settings such as language, theme and chosen provider and model are stored in Chrome storage. If you use Chrome Sync, these settings may sync between your browsers. They contain no text and no keys.
- API keys and sign-in keys are stored only on this device, in the extension's local storage. They are never synced and web pages cannot read them. Note that this is not an encrypted operating-system keychain: someone with access to your Chrome profile could read them. Disconnecting a provider deletes its key.
- Page translations are kept in the tab's memory only while the page is open, so translating it again is instant. They are never written to storage.
- A popup draft is kept in memory until you close the browser. You can turn this off in Settings, and Clear drafts and cache deletes it.
- No translation history is stored.
What Transello does not do
Transello does not:
- run accounts or servers of its own;
- show advertising or use tracking;
- collect browsing history;
- translate pages in the background;
- sell data or use it for any purpose other than the translation you requested.
Use of data obtained through Chrome extension APIs complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
